Four new stores within just one month
Praktiker expands in Poland and Greece
Kirkel – 24 March 2011. Praktiker Group is this year extending its presence in Poland and - in spite of persisting macroeconomic weaknesses - also in Greece. In the next four weeks alone, the DIY operator with headquarters in Kirkel, Germany, will be opening four new stores in these two focus countries.
In Poland, the first store opening of the year take place today in Opole, two more will follow in mid-April in Pila and Leszno and one in autumn in Lublin. The already dense network of Praktiker stores in this demanding and highly competitive market will thus be extended to 25 locations. The new stores are standard-size formats with selling space ranging between 6,000 and 9,000 square meters.
In Greece, the expansion activities increasingly focus on secondary centres outside the conurbations. Accordingly, Praktiker will extend the store portfolio in this country by two new locations of a compact format with 3,400 square meters selling space – on 1 April in Xanthi and in November in Alexandroupolis. Both cities are situated on the Aegean Sea in the North East of the country.
“With these steps the internationalization of Praktiker Group is again picking up speed purposefully and within moderation”, explained Michael Arnold, Member of the Management Board responsible for Praktiker International. “We are extending our network in both countries in regions where we have not been present so far, but where we see sufficient demand with regard to renovation, refurbishment and modernisation. We are responding to this demand with assortments and services that are tailored to the specific needs of the different markets. We are investing in Greece because it continues to be a very profitable country for us and because we want to remain the leading DIY store operator in this country. And we are further extending our presence in Poland because we are now in a position to benefit from economies of scale“.
Until the end of 2013, the Praktiker Group plans to extend its international store portfolio by more than 20 locations to around 130 stores. In addition to Poland and Greece the third country in focus for the expansion will be the Ukraine where Praktiker Group plans to continue its temporarily suspended expansion as from 2012.
